One question, a few sentences, and the source of any number. Where the answer needs more room, it links to the guide that has it.

How long should a resume be?
One page under roughly five years of experience, two pages above that. The one-page rule has quietly collapsed: surveys of U.S. HR professionals now put the clear majority in the one-to-two-page band, with experienced candidates tilting to two. Three pages needs a reason, like a research or patent record.
Yes, whenever the form lets you attach one. Most U.S. hiring managers say they read cover letters, a majority expect one even when the posting calls it optional, and most say a strong one influences the interview decision. The exception is a form with no upload field — then put the effort into the resume summary.

Between about 250 and 400 words, on one page, in three to four short paragraphs. Vendor surveys put the typical reading time at about 30 seconds to a minute, so the first two sentences carry the decision. Anything past one page is read diagonally at best.
Not in the United States. EEOC guidance treats requests likely to reveal protected characteristics as something to avoid, and says a photograph may be requested only after an offer has been made and accepted — so many employers set photo-bearing applications aside to protect their own process. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the convention is the opposite.
City and state only — no street address. Location is a real filter (a large share of recruiters screen by it in the applicant tracking system), so leaving the city out costs you matches; the street address adds nothing and is a privacy risk. Add "open to relocation" or "remote" if that is true.

PDF, unless the posting asks for .docx — then send .docx. Modern parsers read a text-based PDF fine; what breaks them is a scan, a screenshot, or text baked into an image. Name the file with your own name, not "resume-final-v3".
It is a risk with no upside in the U.S. In published parsing tests across eight applicant tracking systems, only a couple handled two-column and table layouts reliably, and the strictest of the widely used systems effectively requires a single column. A single-column document loses nothing for the human reader either.

Dozens, not a handful: published estimates cluster at roughly 30 to 80 per offer, with plenty of searches needing 100 to 300. A meta-analysis across 27 studies landed on a range of about 32 to 200+. The spread is driven by field, level and network far more than by effort.

Two to three properly tailored applications a day is a sustainable full-time pace; ten sloppy ones are worse than three good ones. A tailored application takes about an hour by hand, which is what makes "50 today" a plan to be ignored more efficiently. Set the number from your available hours, then hold it for weeks.
Budget for months, not weeks. The average duration of unemployment in the U.S. sat around 25 weeks in mid-2026, and white-collar searches have got longer rather than shorter. Plan your finances and your energy on the average, not on the best case.

One to two weeks if you hear back at all — and most applications get no reply. Silence is the default in this market, and the most common point to be ghosted is right after applying, so it says little about your application. Follow up once after a week or two, then move on.
Should I apply if I do not meet every requirement?
Yes, if you meet most of the must-haves; no, if you miss several of them. Postings are wish lists, and the first three to five requirement bullets are the ones the screener was briefed on — those are the ones that matter. Judge the gap before spending the hour, rather than after.
Usually they cannot tell AI from human writing — in a blind test the large majority of readers could not identify AI-written cover letters. What they do spot quickly is generic: around a third of hiring managers say a generic AI resume is obvious in under twenty seconds, and obviously generic applications land badly with roughly four in five. Personalized, AI-assisted ones land positively with about six in ten.

Rarely. Applicant tracking systems parse, rank and sort — the decision is a person clicking through a list. The much-quoted claim that three quarters of resumes are rejected by software before a human sees them traces back to a vendor that shut down over a decade ago and never published a method; studies of real pipelines find the overwhelming majority of applications are seen by a human, and only a small minority of recruiters use broad automatic rejection.

Should I send a thank-you note after an interview?
Yes — by email, within 24 hours. The overwhelming majority of hiring managers consider it appropriate and roughly two thirds say it influences their decision, yet only about a quarter of candidates send one. Reference one specific thing from the conversation; a generic template wastes the advantage.

Three is the U.S. average: a phone screen of around fifteen minutes, a video interview of thirty to forty-five, then a hiring-manager, technical or panel round. Roughly a fifth of processes run four rounds and a smaller share five or more. Ask for the full sequence at the screen so you can pace yourself.

No, and do not volunteer your salary history either — more than twenty states now ban employers from asking for it. If a form forces a number, give a researched range for the role and market and say it is negotiable. In eighteen states plus DC the employer has to publish a range anyway, so read the posting before you guess.

Where a number comes from a vendor survey rather than a public statistic, we say so and quote it as a magnitude. If an answer here disagrees with something you have read elsewhere, the guides carry the longer version and the reasoning.
